Supernova class gathers momentum ahead of first ever Scottish nationals
Sailing will take place at the end of May
Excitement is building within the fast growing Supernova class here in Scotland, as sailors look ahead to the first ever Scottish Supernova National Championships set for St Mary’s Loch Sailing Club from 16-17 May.
And with Supernova numbers increasing in recent years, it seems growing interest and appetite for more Scottish events is the result of focussed efforts from those within the Supernova fleet, who are eying continued growth in participation, and long-term sustainability for the class.
With 31 boats already entered from all over the UK, and numbers still climbing, the event is shaping up to be a fantastic celebration of the class – with realistic ambitions of reaching 40 boats on the start line.
From speaking to those within the class, it’s clear Supernova sailors are eager to promote the inclusive nature and strong, friendly competition the community has to offer.
They tell us that this growth is, in large part, down to the breadth of sailors the class attracts. From club racers to experienced helms and national champions from other classes, it seems the Supernova continues to appeal to sailors looking for close racing, a friendly atmosphere, and a boat that rewards skill and is inclusive of a range of physiques.
It’s thought a mix of competitors will be represented at the Scottish Nationals, with competitors expected from a wide range of ages, sailing backgrounds, and localities – all adding to the quality and depth of racing.
In Scotland, the community is clearly gaining traction. Interest in the class is growing across clubs, and bold ambition from the class is clear: to see a strong, sustainable Scottish Supernova fleet that can one day stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the 100-boat fleets seen at major UK national events.
As the Supernova class continues to develop, events like this play a crucial role – not just in showcasing competitive racing, but in bringing people together, inspiring new sailors, and strengthening the broader sailing community.
