Supporting safer sailing: Inside the RYA NI Safety Management Workshop

Clubs from across Northern Ireland came together at Newforge Sports Complex to strengthen their approach to safety management and safe inclusive practices, with practical guidance, shared experiences and a focus on inclusive best practice.

Clubs and volunteers gathered at Newforge Sports Complex for the RYA Northern Ireland Safety Management Systems Workshop, a practical session focused on building confidence and consistency in safety across sailing activities.

Designed to support clubs of all sizes, the workshop explored how safety and safe inclusive practices can be managed in an effective way across all clubs.

What the workshop was about

The session brought together a mix of theory, discussion and real-life examples, helping attendees better understand how to approach safety management within their own clubs.

Rather than focusing on rigid processes, the workshop encouraged a practical and proportionate approach,  making safety systems easier to implement and maintain.

Led by experienced facilitators, the day created space for questions, shared learning and open conversation around common challenges faced by clubs.

Building confidence in safety

For many clubs, safety management can feel complex or overwhelming.

This workshop aimed to simplify key areas, helping participants feel more confident in their approach.

By breaking down topics such as risk assessment, communication and inclusive practice, attendees were able to see how safety can be both structured and adaptable.

The focus throughout was simple

  • make it practical

  • make it proportionate

  • make it inclusive

Why it matters

Workshops like this play a key role in supporting clubs to deliver safe and accessible sailing opportunities.
By strengthening understanding and providing clear guidance, clubs are better equipped to support a wider range of participants, including those involved in Sailability and inclusive programmes.

Creating confidence in safety doesn’t just reduce risk, it enables more people to take part and enjoy time on the water.

A collaborative environment

A key strength of the workshop was the collaborative atmosphere.

Clubs were encouraged to share experiences, discuss challenges and learn from one another, creating a supportive environment where ideas could be exchanged openly.

This sense of collaboration is central to strengthening safety practices across the network, ensuring clubs feel supported rather than isolated in their approach.

The Safety Management Systems Workshop is part of a wider effort by RYA Northern Ireland to support clubs in delivering safe, inclusive and well-managed sailing activities.

By providing practical guidance and opportunities to learn from others, initiatives like this are helping clubs build confidence and continue developing their safety practices for the future.
