Team Racing at its best! The RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships 2026
This year’s event delivered adrenaline, resilience and lots of fun!
Two days of tactical battles, tight racing and brilliant teamwork shone at Oxford Sailing club, as youth sailors took part in the biggest youth team racing event of the year, the RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships.
Teams compete across three age categories:
- Youth (Under 19) – 3v3 team racing in Fireflies (teams of six sailors)
- Junior (Under 17) – 2v2 team racing in RS Fevas (teams of four sailors)
- Super Junior (Under 15) – 2v2 team racing in RS Fevas (teams of four sailors)
As the racing unfolded, it was clear this championship was about more than just speed. Split decision tactics, communication and resilience all added to the results as the youth sailors worked together to try and outmanoeuvre their competitors.
But the impact of team racing goes far beyond the finish line. From confidence building to meticulous teamwork, the young sailors commented on how being part of such an event has enabled them to form lifelong friendships, and valuable lessons that they can take with them off the water.
We caught up with the teams to find out more:
With perfect conditions for the event delivering 17-23 knots, the young sailors enjoyed a weekend of fast, adrenaline-fuelled racing.
Event Director, Niall McLeod commented on how it was great to get so much time on the water: “After a few years of less than ideal conditions it was great to be able to get a full weekend of racing in with a range of conditions to test the teams. A massive thank you needs to go to the Eric Twiname Trust for their continued support of the event; Oxford Sailing Club for once again being gracious hosts; RS Sailing and all the organisations who kindly lent us boats; and all the volunteers without whom it wouldn't be possible to deliver this event.”
Who came out on top?
In the Super Junior Competition, it was a standout performance for Walhampton, with Walhampton Blue claiming first place and Walhampton Red taking third, with NEYYSA mINEOS putting in an impressive performance going home second overall.
The Junior category saw Seaford College and Rutland Racers battling for the podium finish, with Seaford College clinching the win, leaving Rutland Racers in second position with Sevenoaks Black a mighty third overall.
For the Youth category, with 2nd - 3rd tied on points at the end of the round robin it all came down to the knockouts. Sevenoaks and Rutland both went through their semis to the final 2-0 setting up a Ryde Vs Ryde showdown in the petit-final. Ryde on Time came out on top in the petit-final to claim third overall with Rutland Rebels prevailing with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Sevenoaks White in the final to claim the overall.
