Recognising the people who make sailing happen

The RYA NI Impact Award shines a light on the volunteers who give their time freely to improve the way we get on the water. Presented throughout the year, it is a way of saying thank you to the people whose commitment helps our sport thrive, often well away from the spotlight. On Saturday, that thanks went to two of Ballyholme’s most dedicated.

Aidan Pounder, a driving force behind NI racing

Aidan gives countless hours to organising club racing and leading the planning and delivery of major national and international events. His dedication and attention to detail have helped bring prestigious championships to Northern Ireland, raising the profile of our sailing community and creating opportunities for sailors of all ages and abilities. Beyond Ballyholme, Aidan has mentored and supported many race officers through their qualifications, and has been a familiar and reassuring presence behind the RYA NI Youth Championships for a number of years. Known for his enthusiasm, integrity and passion for the sport, his work behind the scenes has left a lasting impact.

Rob Milligan, at the heart of club life

Following three successful years as Commodore, Rob continues to volunteer as Training Principal while supporting almost every aspect of club life, from rescue cover and events to training and day-to-day operations. He has been instrumental in developing youth windsurfing, creating new opportunities for young people and helping build a sustainable pathway for the next generation of sailors. Rob even completed the RYA windsurfing and wingsurfing instructor schemes himself, so that more members could give the sports a try. Always ready to lend a hand, his generosity and unwavering commitment have strengthened the whole club community. Rob is now also on the board of RYA NI.

The value of volunteers

Sailing in Northern Ireland thrives because of people like Aidan and Rob. The events, the training and the pathways that welcome the next generation onto the water simply would not happen without volunteers willing to give so generously of their time. Their impact reaches far beyond Ballyholme Yacht Club and is felt right across our sailing community.
