Women on the Water initiative launched by Cramond Boat Club with backing from RYA Scotland

Empowering women to build confidence, skills and community in Edinburgh

RYA Scotland was thrilled to support the recent launch of Cramond Boat Club’s new Women on the Water (WoW) initiative - a programme designed to encourage more women of all ages and backgrounds to get involved in sailing.

Around a dozen enthusiastic participants turned out for the first session, taking to the water in a mix of club training boats and members’ own dinghies. Some were trying sailing for the first time, while others were rediscovering a passion after years away - all united by a shared desire to build confidence, skills and enjoyment on the water.

To help get the initiative off to a strong start, RYA Scotland supported the session by providing two female instructors, Suzie Sturrock and Suzie Homer. Their expert coaching ensured that everyone, from complete beginners to those feeling a little rusty, felt supported throughout the evening. Just as importantly, their presence offered reassurance and encouragement to participants gaining confidence in their sailing abilities.

There was plenty of laughter along the way as sailors negotiated tight turns and shared the space safely. Even those new to sailing were soon confidently taking a turn at the helm. A highlight of the evening saw the group successfully bringing all the boats together in a close formation, demonstrating the progress made in just a couple of hours on the water.

Once back ashore, the social side of sailing continued in the clubhouse. Over well-earned refreshments and pizza, participants reflected on a highly positive first session. A common theme emerged: the experience had not only been fun, but had also provided a significant boost in confidence.

The success of the evening was made possible thanks to a team effort, with volunteers supporting rigging, launching and recovery, as well as providing safety boat cover. Special thanks were extended to the instructors for their energy and encouragement in creating such an enjoyable and inclusive environment.

Cramond Boat Club is now looking forward to building on this momentum, with many more Women on the Water sessions planned in the months ahead.
