Maximise learner engagement with an interactive explanation and summary. Setting the scene with input from the learners, such as asking them to place the wind and tide arrows to represent what is happening, helps reinforce earlier learning. Having received a clear and concise brief using the magnetic boats and other items, the students will be able to relate the explanation to the instructor’s practical demonstration. At the end of the session, having had a few goes at the manoeuvre themselves, it can be really powerful to encourage the learners to summarise the key points using the models.

Compact enough to fit in any pocket, the boats are 4.5cm long and are red and green to help learners visualise ‘stand on’ and ‘give way’ when teaching the collision regulations.
