Top 5 yacht chartering tips for the Mediterranean

Exclusive advice from Sunsail's experts

Sunsail’s Mediterranean base managers know a thing or two about creating smooth, stress-free sailing holidays in Croatia and Greece. From handy apps to small comforts that make a big difference out on the water, here are their top five tips to help you make the most of your next Sunsail adventure with confidence.

1. Keep an eye on the weather

Before you set sail, download Windy.app - a favourite among Sunsail skippers. Designed for sailors and water sports enthusiasts, it offers detailed weather forecasts, live wind maps, and local reports so you can plan each day on the water with confidence. In the shoulder season, don’t forget to pack a light raincoat and jumper for cooler evenings. The Sunsail base team will promptly notify you of any weather changes that may require your attention or action.

2. Reserve your berth with ease

Exploring Croatia? The MySea app is a must. It helps you find and book marinas, harbours, mooring buoys, or restaurant jetties at the touch of a button. No more guessing where to dock for the night, just smooth sailing from port to port. Greece is a bit old-school when it comes to town quays and moorings, most don’t require (or offer) pre-booking. While some private pontoons can be booked in advance, this is usually done directly with the provider. When you arrive, speak with the base team; they can point you toward the best spots.

If you’re new to the Ionian, this paid guide is a great resource for navigating the ports and town quays of Lefkas: Lefkas Sail Guide.

3. Stay in touch

Whether you’re on a bareboat charter or sailing on flotilla, WhatsApp is the best way to keep connected with the Sunsail base team or lead crew on flotilla. Have a question, need assistance, or just want to share a great sunset snap? You can drop them a message.

4. Be prepared

Make sure all your licenses and documents are ready before you arrive. An ICC is required for Greece, and Day Skipper plus VHF certification are required for Croatia. Take some time to review any pre-departure videos and materials, as they’ll help ensure a seamless check-in and get you out on the water quickly.

If you have any questions about your boat or the local area, be sure to ask the Sunsail base team during your briefing. They’re there to support you and can offer advice before you head out on your adventure.

5. Don’t forget the essentials

It’s the small things that can make a big difference on your holiday. A few Sunsail guest favourites include your preferred tea bags for that perfect morning brew on deck, small dry bag for short journeys in the tender or exploring out on the paddleboard. Don’t forget to pack your own snorkel mask if you’re keen to explore below the surface, Sunsail provide fins only on board, but bringing a mask means you’re all set for spotting marine life the moment you drop anchor.
